Shutterstock payouts: minimum, dates and methods
Shutterstock pays contributors once a month, without a request, by the 15th, as soon as your unpaid earnings reach your payout minimum. The minimum is $25 by default and you can raise it to $2,000. Money goes to PayPal, Skrill or Payoneer only. Here is the calendar, the conditions that block a payment and the video levels behind each sale.

Shutterstock payouts at a glance
We read Shutterstock's payment articles and its contributor Terms of Service on 12 October 2026. The table lists every payout rule they publish.
| Rule | What Shutterstock says |
|---|---|
| Minimum payout | US $25 (Terms of Service, section 8c) |
| Your own minimum | Set in Payout information, from $25 up to $2,000 |
| Frequency | Monthly, for the previous month's earnings |
| Payment date | Issued by the 15th; usually sent between the 7th and the 15th |
| Request needed | No, payments are automatic |
| Methods | PayPal, Skrill or Payoneer |
| Not available | Wire transfer, bank transfer, checks |
| Below the minimum | Earnings roll over, month after month, until the minimum is reached |
| Tax form | An approved form on file, for US and non-US contributors |
| Waiting period | 90 days after the first approved file, for contributors from certain countries |
The monthly payout calendar
Shutterstock's help article gives the sequence. From calculation to payment, it takes approximately two weeks.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1st, 12:00 AM US Eastern | A new cycle starts; the previous month is closed |
| First days of the month | Quality control checks on earnings |
| Around the 3rd | Earnings are calculated for eligible accounts that reached their minimum; this takes a few days |
| After calculation | Unpaid Earnings reset to zero and you receive an email |
| 7th to 15th | PayPal, Skrill and Payoneer payments are usually sent, unless the 7th falls on a weekend |
| Any time | Settings changed after the last day of a month apply to the following month |
The last row matters when you change methods. A payment already being calculated goes out with your old settings. If you switch from PayPal to Payoneer, do it before the month ends.
Payment methods and settings
You pick one method in the Payout information section of Account Settings. The "Make payments to" field takes your name as it appears in the account, or the business name for a business account.
| Method | What you enter | Notes from Shutterstock |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal | The email of your PayPal account | If the address is refused, wait 72 hours after creating the PayPal account and retry |
| Skrill | The email of your Skrill account | Same advice as PayPal |
| Payoneer | Your Payoneer login, to link the accounts | Create one from the settings page or connect an existing one; a confirmation box appears |
- No sharing. You may not share a PayPal, Skrill or Payoneer account with another Shutterstock contributor; the guidelines list it as a reason for warnings.
- Fully set up. A payment can fail or be delayed if the receiving account is not fully set up or verified with the provider. It still appears in Payment History, which lists payments as issued whether or not they were received.
- Regions can change. Supported regions for PayPal, Skrill and Payoneer can change with sanctions or other restrictions. If a country is no longer supported, Shutterstock holds the earnings until payment is possible.
Why a payout does not arrive
Shutterstock's articles name these reasons, in roughly the order to check them:
- You are under your minimum. If you raised it above $25, smaller months roll over.
- No approved tax form. Payments cannot be processed without a complete, current form. If none is submitted within 90 days of the first reminder, Upload and Submit are disabled too. See the Shutterstock tax form guide.
- The 90-day waiting period. Accounts flagged as coming from a high-fraud area become eligible 90 days after their first approved image or clip. Your Earnings Summary then shows "Your account is currently in a 90 day waiting period". It is automated, and no employee can override it.
- The payout account is not ready. An unverified PayPal, Skrill or Payoneer account can make the payment fail.
- The account is disabled or under investigation. No payment is issued in that case.
Why the payment is lower than expected
Two things explain most gaps between the Unpaid Earnings figure and the amount received. First, tax: Shutterstock says deductions are "very likely" the main cause. Second, timing: the cycle resets on the 1st, but the first days of the month are used for quality control, so Unpaid Earnings during that window already include the new month's sales.
Small amounts per sale are a different matter. Each download is paid at a percentage of what the customer paid, and Shutterstock rounds any result under $0.10 up to $0.10: "$0.10 is the minimum payout per download, regardless of level." Large subscription packs can work out at $0.20 to $0.30 per download, which is where those minimums come from.
Video earnings levels
Shutterstock pays a share of the price per asset, set by three things: the customer's plan, the license type (Standard or Enhanced) and your level at the time of the download. Video has its own levels, counted on video licenses in the calendar year.
| Level | Video licenses this calendar year | Your share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Up to 10 | 15% |
| 2 | 11 to 50 | 20% |
| 3 | 51 to 250 | 25% |
| 4 | 251 to 5,000 | 30% |
| 5 | 5,001 to 25,000 | 35% |
| 6 | Over 25,000 | 40% |
For packs and subscriptions, the share applies to the price per asset assuming full use: Shutterstock's example is a $49 monthly plan for 10 images, or $4.90 per image. To turn levels into a yearly estimate, use the stock footage earnings calculator; for the wider picture, read how much stock footage earns. Adobe Stock pays differently, on request from a $25 balance: see Adobe Stock payouts.

Questions
What is the Shutterstock minimum payout?
US $25. You can set a higher minimum in the Payout information section of your account settings, up to $2,000. Earnings below your minimum roll over to the next month.
When does Shutterstock pay contributors?
Once a month. The cycle closes at midnight US Eastern time on the 1st, earnings are calculated from around the 3rd, and PayPal, Skrill and Payoneer payments usually go out between the 7th and the 15th.
Do I have to request a payout on Shutterstock?
No. Payments are automatic once you are eligible and your unpaid earnings reach the minimum you set.
Can Shutterstock pay me by bank transfer?
No. Shutterstock pays through PayPal, Skrill or Payoneer only, and says it does not support wire transfer, bank transfer or checks.
Why is my Shutterstock payment lower than my earnings?
Shutterstock says tax deductions are very likely the main cause. Also, the first days of a new month count toward the next payment, so the Unpaid Earnings figure can include amounts that are not in the current one.
What happens to my earnings if I close my Shutterstock account?
Under the Terms of Service, if you cancel before reaching the payout minimum, you forfeit those royalties. Earnings accrued after an account is disabled are not owed either.
What percentage does Shutterstock pay for video?
15% to 40% of the price the customer paid, by level. Level 1 covers up to 10 video licenses in the calendar year; level 6 starts above 25,000. Levels reset on January 1.
